There is a moment that happens before you speak.

Most people don’t notice it. People who preemptively soften have lived inside it so long it has become invisible — the automatic, seamless movement from what is true to what this moment can hold.

It happens in under a second. Which is why it is so difficult to see. And why the cost of it accumulates so quietly.

Here is what that moment actually is:

It is the space between your knowing and your expression. And somewhere in that space, a calculation runs — how much of this is safe to offer, how much needs to be shaped, what version of this will this person, this room, this relationship be able to receive without difficulty.

The calculation is so fast and so practiced that it doesn’t feel like a calculation. It feels like wisdom. Like maturity. Like the natural sophistication of someone who understands nuance.

Which is precisely what makes it so hard to question.
